Play Ideas and Advice - Cooking
There are two ways you can approach this activity:1) select a fairly straight forward recipe like the 'Rock Cakes' recipe shown below, or
2) buy a cookie or brownie mix from your supermarket. This option is quite cheap (generally under a pound if you go for their own brand) and they're brilliant things to have in your cupboard ready for a rainy day (and also a lot less messy).
Whichever option you go for, children love to cook and as long as there is always an adult supervising them, they will have fantastic time.
Rock Cake Recipe
You Will Need:
- 3oz butter
- 8oz self raising flour
- 1 level tsp lemon essence (squirt of lemon juice will do)
- 4oz currants (or raisins)
- 3oz sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 tbspn milk
Utensils:
- Mixing bowl
- Jug
- Fork / Whisk
- Wooden Spoon
- Teaspoon
- Tablespoon
- Baking Tray
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 220 degrees C (adults only)
- Put the flour and butter into the mixing bowl and rub together.
- Mix in the sugar.
- Beat the egg thoroughly and add both the egg and milk to the mixing bowl (mixture must be fairly stiff).
- Mix in the dried fruit.
- Grease your baking tray.
- Drop mounds of mixture from tablespoon onto baking tray.
- Bake for 15 minutes.
- Enjoy with a cup of tea.
